Presentation:  Insurance Analytics Boot Camp:  Cut Through the Buzzwords and Learn How Analytics can Maximize Your Insurance Data Assets

Abstract:

The industries that pioneered the use of Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics software are insurance, financial services and retail. Companies in those industries share the need to understand who their customers and prospects are, how to up-sell and cross-sell products and services, and how to predict customer behavior (including bad behavior through processes such as fraud detection).  BI helps them get data for these areas, and many firms use it extensively. However, they also need analytics tools to understand this data. Only a handful of people in the most sophisticated enterprises are taking advantage of these tools.

Insurance firms need to successfully integrate analytics into their operations and strategic planning to be competitive in the marketplace.  But first they must navigate through a deluge of analytics buzzwords, acronyms and concepts. They’ve heard of data visualization, data mining, predicative analytics, forecasting, game theory, model management, and operations research, but wonder what they mean and how they apply. Often, many terms are used for the same concept and likewise the same term may be used to mean different things. It is difficult to get to the relevant ideas and concepts through the barrage of articles, case studies and presentations from vendors, analysts and pundits without a lexicon. 

Rick Sherman will unravel these terms, explain the concepts and describe their relevance to the insurance industry. Rick will discuss how the concepts apply to the data underpinnings, identify the skills needed, and present advanced analytical approaches that have been used successfully by insurance companies.  The presentation is a boot camp to enable the attendees to better understand and critically evaluate analytics initiatives and products.

About the Instructor: Rick Sherman is the founder of Athena IT Solutions, a consultancy specializing in analytics, business intelligence (BI) and data integration. Rick has 25 years of data warehousing and BI experience working on over six dozen projects. Rick has worked in a variety of industries including many insurance and financial services firms.  Rick has also performed marketing, industry and competitive analysis for high tech firms evaluating their products for appropriateness for the marketplace.

Rick is an expert instructor and speaker at numerous conferences and seminars. He teaches at Northeastern University's graduate school of engineering. He has published over 200 articles in various industry publications and has been quoted in publications such as Business Week and CFO.

Prior to starting Athena IT Solutions, Rick was a director at Price Waterhouse Coopers Consulting.  Rick has an MBA and a BS in Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
